Before You Write a Book, Do This First (Almost No One Does)

Most people start writing their book the same way.

They open a blank document.
They type a title.
And they begin.

It feels productive. It feels exciting.

It’s also backward.

Because if you don’t know what your book is meant to do, you’re just creating content… not building a strategy.

Here’s a smarter starting point:
Write your back cover copy first.

It sounds simple, maybe even a little odd. But this one step forces clarity in a way nothing else does.

Your back cover answers the real questions:

• Who is this book for?
• What problem does it solve?
• Why should someone care?
• What will they gain after reading it?

In other words… it’s your marketing.

And marketing should always come before creation.

When you know how you’re going to position your book, everything else becomes easier. Your chapters make more sense. Your messaging tightens. Your content becomes intentional instead of scattered.

Without that clarity, you risk writing a book that feels disconnected from your business… or worse, completely unrelated.

And yes, you can write about anything.

But if you’re a business owner, your book should connect back to what you do.

Not in a forced or salesy way, but in a strategic one.

Because here’s the truth most people don’t consider:
A book is a business.

It requires:

• A purpose
• A plan
• A path to ROI

Otherwise, it becomes an expensive passion project that doesn’t actually support your goals.

And let’s talk about those goals for a second.

Before you write a single chapter, ask yourself:

• Do I want speaking opportunities?
• Do I want more clients?
• Do I want to build authority in my niche?
• Do I want to tell my story for personal reasons?

All of those are valid.

But they lead to very different types of books.

Someone who wants to become a keynote speaker doesn’t need a 300-page deep dive. They need something concise, impactful, and easy to share.

Someone who wants to build emotional connection might focus more on storytelling.

Someone who wants leads might structure their book like a funnel.

See how different that is?

Without clarity upfront, you end up guessing your way through the process.

And guessing is expensive.

So before you write your first chapter, pause.

Write the back cover.
Define the outcome.
Decide what this book is supposed to do.
