The Problem With ‘Marketing to Everyone’

If you’re in a B2B service business, whether it’s cybersecurity, insurance, consulting, or anything else, you’ve probably been tempted to cast the widest net possible. Post everywhere. Email blast thousands. Run ads to the universe.

But here’s the truth: marketing to everyone means connecting with no one.

The most effective B2B businesses use a completely different approach, one that’s direct, intentional, and built on a real prospect list. And it works faster than you think.

Step 1: Know Your Vertical (and Pick Just One to Start)

Before you build a single spreadsheet or send a single email, you need to get specific about who you’re going after. Not ‘small businesses’; that’s too broad. Think in terms of verticals: credit unions, private schools, rural utilities, healthcare clinics, and law firms.

Pick your top one or two verticals and commit to them first. Once you’ve landed three clients in a single industry, you have proof, and that proof opens doors nationally. ‘I work with three Sacramento-area credit unions, and I’d love to connect with similar organizations in Denver’ is a completely different conversation than a cold introduction.

Step 2: Build a Real Prospect List

This is where most people skip ahead and pay for a leads tool they don’t need yet. Start simpler: create a spreadsheet of actual companies you want to work with. For each one, capture:

  • Company name and website
  • Decision maker’s name and title (owner, IT manager, HR director, whoever makes the call)
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • LinkedIn profile URL
  • Outreach log: when you reached out, how, and what happened

A focused list of 500–1,000 companies in your area is worth more than a database of 50,000 strangers nationwide. You can actually work through a targeted list. You can personalize it. You can follow up.

Step 3: Reach Them in Multiple Ways

One touchpoint rarely works. Plan to reach each prospect through at least 2–3 channels:

  • LinkedIn connection request + personal message
  • Direct email (keep it short, one paragraph, one ask)
  • Their website’s contact form (it goes directly to someone who checks it)
  • A physical mailer or flyer with your business card
  • Phone call, yes, actual phone calls still work
  • In-person drop-by for truly local prospects

If all else fails and you can’t get a response, comment on their LinkedIn posts or tag them. It sounds bold, but it gets noticed when done respectfully.

Step 4: Ask for 10 Minutes, Not an Hour

When you do reach someone, don’t ask for a big meeting. Ask for 10 minutes. That’s it. Executives and business owners will almost always say yes to 10 minutes, and if they’re genuinely interested, those 10 minutes will naturally extend or turn into a second call.

Your pitch should be short and relevant and hit on what they care about: saving time, reducing risk, and not having to deal with it themselves.

Bonus Tip: Bundle Your Services

If you offer more than one service to a similar audience, lead with both. ‘We help companies like yours with cybersecurity and employee Medicare benefits’ immediately doubles your value proposition in a single sentence, and it makes you memorable.

Direct marketing isn’t glamorous, but it is powerful. It’s not about getting more followers or going viral. It’s about building a targeted list of the right people, reaching out consistently, and showing up where your ideal clients already are. Start local. Stay focused. Expand once you have results to point to.

That’s not old-school thinking; that’s smart business.

Katrina Sawa, The Jumpstart Your Biz Coach

“Before I met Katrina, I was a personal trainer/ group fitness instructor in Manhattan running around like a madwoman all day long. By the time I came home I had just about enough energy to stare at the wall and drool. I knew I couldn’t go on like this forever. And I was planning on having a child, so my time for running around was about to be, well, cut out completely. How was I going to make more money than I was making, and work less??? I had no idea, and I am so fortunate that I stumbled into Katrina Sawa! She spelled out exactly what I needed to do, step by step, and supported me along the way. Before I knew it, I had launched my first online fitness program, and it was successful! Before I met Katrina, I would never have thought I could do this, but she prompted me to keep taking steps, whether I thought I could or not! I now run fun and effective online fitness programs regularly and end up helping many more people in much less time! And I have plenty of time to spend with my son.”
