My author story
So, funny thing is that I NEVER wanted to become an author.
I never had any idea I would write a book, ever.
Me? No way… I don’t even like reading!
I never thought about it until about 3-4 years into my entrepreneurial journey… I always figured, why do I want to focus on selling a $20 thing when I could sell a $200, $2,000, or even $20,000 thing!!?? That seemed silly.
Until… I started going to more conferences and business workshops all over the country. I would see the speakers at those, many of them had a book!
I saw people getting interviewed on the talk shows on TV because they had a book!
I thought, OOOOOOHHHHHH, I can use the book as a great lead generator and marketing piece rather than worry about selling it all the time, I’ll give it out or send it out so I get seen as an expert and get invited to speak or be interviewed!
Now, that made sense to my marketing brain.
However, when I figured this out, I was still in massive growth stages of my life and being the practical gal that I am, I said to myself “it’s not a good idea to spend a lot of time writing my own full book right now, I need to build up my client base still, that would take away from those revenue producing activities.”
At the time, many people were just starting to introduce in anthologies or compilation books and that seemed like a more logical way to become an author at first so I did that. In 2006, I was published in Power and Soul: 42 Successful Entrepreneurs Share Their Secrets for Creating the Business and Life of Your Dreams. The compiling author was my coach at the time, Ali Brown. She was a big marketer and all of us shared the heck out of that thing. I even got on my own local TV station with that book as the author!
After that book, I wrote a chapter in two other compilation books with other experts and entrepreneurs… then I was an author with three books! I worked that hard when I went to events, showed and shared the books in person, gave some away, sold others but it made me look very accomplished in the early stages of my business. And writing three chapters in three different books was a heck of a lot easier than writing a full book myself and marketing it all myself.
In 2009, once I finally leapt over the $100K/year mark in my business’ revenues, I got inspired to write my own full book. I was at an event of a friend’s who was teaching about writing books and the download came in on what it would be about. The problem is that it wasn’t a full download, only partial. It took me three years to work through writing that book and in 2012 I finally released the first edition of Love Yourself Successful: A Woman’s Step-by-Step Guide to Finally Taking Charge of Your Life and Designing the Business of Your Dreams. It’s more of a memior with business lessons weaved in.
Because once someone read my story, how I overcame certain obstacles, heard my heart, received some great advice… they wanted more. Many people who read my book immediately hired me as their business coach. Many followed me closer too and would show up to more events to learn more while considering hiring me. Some waited years to hire me but wished they’d done it sooner.
Today, I have 20 books total, crazy, huh? Three of my own, the Love book has two editions now, plus the Jumpstart Your New Business Now book is great for teaching the practical, tactical marketing and business strategies to newer entrepreneurs. Then 17 compilation books with two more on the way this year!
When you write chapters in a book or even a whole book, you will find that people who are following you will connect on a much deeper level with you. Some will want what you’ve got right away too, others will lie waiting for the perfect time. Some will refer you to their friends or write glowing reviews. A book can be a very powerful thing – both for your marketing, attaining clients and for getting publicity and speaking opportunities.
Is it time you became an author? Of one, two, or even 5+ books over the next few years?? One a year, why not? If you’re writing just a chapter in a compilation book like my Jumpstart Your ____ book series, or like some of the books I publish for other compiling authors every year. It can be a great “event” to share with your followers and a wonderful way to grow your client base too.
