You’ve Done the Work. Now Someone Else Is Saying It First.

Imagine this: you’re part of a multi-speaker workshop series. You’ve spent months developing your signature talking points, your stories, and your specific frameworks. Then you sit through the presentations before yours, and speaker after speaker covers your material. By the time it’s your turn, the audience has already heard it.

This isn’t just frustrating. It erodes your authority, your perceived uniqueness, and ultimately, your impact.

And the worst part? The other speakers often aren’t doing it on purpose. After working alongside you for months or years, your insights have become part of how they think. They don’t realize they’re delivering your best lines.

Why This Happens (and Why It’s Not Personal)

When you collaborate closely with other professionals over time, ideas cross-pollinate. Your way of explaining something becomes part of the shared vocabulary of the group. Your frameworks get referenced in casual conversation. Your talking points show up in how others describe their own work.

It’s actually a sign that your ideas are powerful; they’ve stuck. But that doesn’t mean you have to accept the situation as-is.

How to Handle It: The Reorganization Conversation

This doesn’t need to be a confrontation. It needs to be a planning meeting. Here’s how to frame it:

  • Acknowledge the collaboration: ‘We’ve been doing this together for so long that our ideas have really blended together, which is great…’
  • Name the problem without blame: ‘…but I’ve noticed some of my core content is getting covered before I present, and it’s reducing my impact.’
  • Make a specific ask: ‘Can we do a planning session to map out exactly who covers what, so there’s no overlap? ‘

The goal isn’t to accuse anyone of stealing your content. The goal is to get back to a structure where each speaker has a clear lane, and your material lands with the weight it deserves.

Set Up a Content Map

In your next planning meeting, create a simple one-page breakdown of each speaker’s specific topics. Make it concrete. Not just ‘I talk about real estate, and she talks about finances,’ but line-item specifics. ‘I cover the home equity conversation. She covers pension evaluations and forensic accounting.’

Share it before every workshop. Revisit it when new speakers join or roles shift. Treat it like a living document.

Go First If You Can

If your talking points are consistently being covered by earlier speakers, consider requesting a different spot in the lineup. Going first removes the problem entirely. Your content is fresh, your message lands cleanly, and you set the tone for the entire workshop.

The Bigger Picture: Your Uniqueness Is an Asset

When the audience is asking for you, requesting you by name on evaluations, that’s a signal. Your perspective, your framework, and your delivery are what make the experience valuable. Protecting that isn’t being precious about your ideas. It’s honoring the work you’ve put in and the specific value you bring to the room.

Speak up. Have the planning meeting. Protect your lane. Your audience deserves to hear your best work, not an echo of it.

P.S. If you’ve ever been in a situation where your ideas or talking points showed up in someone else’s presentation before you had the chance to share them, you’re not alone. These dynamics happen more often than people talk about.

If you’d like another set of eyes on how to protect your content, structure your speaking role, or strengthen the way your expertise shows up in collaborative events, I’m happy to help.

Katrina Sawa, The Jumpstart Your Biz Coach

“Before I met Katrina, I was a personal trainer/ group fitness instructor in Manhattan running around like a madwoman all day long. By the time I came home I had just about enough energy to stare at the wall and drool. I knew I couldn’t go on like this forever. And I was planning on having a child, so my time for running around was about to be, well, cut out completely. How was I going to make more money than I was making, and work less??? I had no idea, and I am so fortunate that I stumbled into Katrina Sawa! She spelled out exactly what I needed to do, step by step, and supported me along the way. Before I knew it, I had launched my first online fitness program, and it was successful! Before I met Katrina, I would never have thought I could do this, but she prompted me to keep taking steps, whether I thought I could or not! I now run fun and effective online fitness programs regularly and end up helping many more people in much less time! And I have plenty of time to spend with my son.”
