If you’re planning to publish a book, there’s one thing you should never skip: pre-launch promotion. Whether you’re self-publishing or launching through Amazon, success depends just as much on your marketing strategy as it does on your manuscript.

Why You Need a Book Supporter List

The secret behind many best-selling books? A supporter list—made up of friends, clients, followers, and even family who are willing to do more than just buy your book. These supporters help amplify your message by:

  • Purchasing your book on launch day

  • Sharing your promotion on their social media or email lists

  • Leaving reviews on Amazon or Goodreads

When I launched my first solo book on Amazon in 2018, I had over 150 supporters who committed to buying, reviewing, and sharing it. Their collective reach led to international best-seller status, not just from my own audience, but theirs too.

Start Marketing Before You Start Writing

One mistake many authors make is waiting until the book is finished to start thinking about promotion. But in reality, you should be building buzz long before launch day.

This means:

  • Teasing your book on social media

     

  • Sharing sneak peeks or cover reveals

     

  • Creating a “runway” of excitement and visibility that builds momentum

     

Remember: if people don’t know your book is coming, they won’t be ready to buy it.

Collect Full Contact Info – Yes, Even Phone Numbers!

Email addresses are great, but if you want to take your promotion to the next level, start collecting:

  • Phone numbers

     

  • Mailing addresses

     

Here’s why: You can send voice blasts or text messages before launch day, and even mail physical promos like bookmarks, postcards, or flyers. For example, I’m currently preparing a mailing campaign for my upcoming LevelUp Live! event, targeting everyone in my database with a mailing address.

Even if a few people complain about receiving a message, the return on visibility and action is usually worth it. Don’t market based on what you like—market based on what actually works.

Run Contests to Build Your Launch List

One smart way to grow your list fast? Run a giveaway. For example, you can offer 10 free copies of your book, but require full contact information to enter.

It’s a small investment that can give you dozens (or even hundreds) of:

  • New leads

     

  • Mailing addresses

     

  • Engaged potential buyers and sharers

     

Once they’re in your system, you can keep them updated about your launch and future offers.

Final Thoughts: Your Book Deserves a Solid Launch Plan

If you’re serious about writing a book, be just as serious about how you’ll launch and market it. Don’t wait until the last minute to scramble for attention. Instead, build your runway, rally your supporters, and leverage every channel—from email to snail mail—to get the word out.
