Let me guess…
Your business exists because of you.
Your ideas. Your relationships. Your instincts. Your work ethic.
You started it. You grew it. You made it work.
And now?
Everything still runs through you.
Sales need your approval.
Clients want you, not your team.
Decisions—big and small—wait in your inbox.
Nothing really moves unless you touch it.
If this feels familiar, you’re not failing.
But you are likely founder dependent, and that’s one of the biggest (and most overlooked) growth killers I see in small businesses.
What Founder Dependence Actually Looks Like
Founder dependence doesn’t always feel like a problem at first. In fact, early on, it feels like control, quality, and speed.
You tell yourself:
-
“It’s faster if I do it myself.”
-
“No one can explain it the way I can.”
-
“Once things calm down, I’ll delegate.”
Sound reasonable, right?
But over time, founder dependence turns into this:
-
You can’t take time off without things slowing down
-
Revenue flatlines even though demand exists
-
You’re constantly busy, but not making strategic progress
-
Your team waits for you instead of acting
And here’s the part most people don’t want to admit:
Your business isn’t stuck because you’re not working hard enough.
It’s stuck because it’s designed to depend on you.
The Ceiling No One Warns You About
When you are the hub for everything, growth has a limit, and that limit is you.
You only have so many hours.
So much energy.
So much decision-making capacity.
Once you hit that max, the business hits it too.
It doesn’t matter how good your offer is.
It doesn’t matter how many leads you could be serving.
It doesn’t matter how talented you are.
If you’re the bottleneck, growth slows… or stops.
And this is usually the point where burnout shows up quietly. Not in flames, but in frustration.
You start wondering:
-
“Why does this feel harder than it should?”
-
“Why am I always busy but not moving forward?”
-
“Is this really what running a business is supposed to feel like?”
This Isn’t About Letting Go of Control — It’s About Building Capacity
Let me be clear: founder dependence is not a character flaw.
Most businesses are built this way by default, especially service-based businesses and personal brands.
The problem isn’t that you care.
The problem is that the business never evolved past needing you.
Real growth happens when you stop being the center of every process and start becoming the architect.
That means:
-
Clear decision-making frameworks (so everything doesn’t land on your desk)
-
Systems that guide how work gets done
-
Roles that own outcomes—not just tasks
-
A business model that can scale without draining you
This doesn’t mean disappearing.
It means stepping into leadership instead of being the glue holding everything together.
The Question That Changes Everything
Here’s a simple but powerful question I ask clients all the time:
“What would break if you stepped away for two weeks?”
Whatever your answer is, that’s where founder dependence lives.
And that’s also where your biggest opportunity is.
Because once you see it, you can fix it.
Ready to Remove Yourself as the Bottleneck?
If you’re realizing that your business relies on you a little too much—and you’re ready to build something more sustainable, scalable, and sane—I’d love to help.
A strategy session isn’t about pressure or pitching.

You don’t need to work harder.
You need a smarter structure.
And that’s fixable.
1. Call for Authors & Speakers – I’m looking for authors AND speakers this year for my Power of Connection book and virtual summit happening this Summer. I have a client filling a book with co-authors called, The Way She Leads. And I have openings for about 5 more clients writing solo books this year. Will you be one of these best-selling authors?
2. PolkaDot Powerhouse Events – If you’re looking for more connection, sisterhood, support, and community with other positive-minded women, then I would invite you to check out what we’re doing at Polka Dot Placer County! Learn more about our upcoming events and get on the email invite list here. (P.S. There are chapters everywhere and online if you’re not local to me, still go.)
3. 1-on-1 Coaching & Consulting – The other day, someone who’s known me for a while said she was looking for a consultant. I thought, “Well, that’s me, I can help,” but she thinks of me just as a coach. I personally DO BOTH in all of my coaching… some people will argue that they are different. Not me, to me, it CAN be the same, and that’s what I provide. FYI.
4. Book Self-Publishing Support and Launches – these services are all 1-on-1 right now, and pricing is all “a la carte” depending on what you need. I love helping people self-publish as it’s the fastest way to get your message out there and start getting your book to work FOR YOU in your business, bringing in leads, clients, and speaking.
5. Speaking opportunities and Co-Author opportunities – there are many… if you want to learn more about these, book a call, please.

Katrina Sawa, The Jumpstart Your Biz Coach
“Before I met Katrina, I was a personal trainer/ group fitness instructor in Manhattan running around like a madwoman all day long. By the time I came home I had just about enough energy to stare at the wall and drool. I knew I couldn’t go on like this forever. And I was planning on having a child, so my time for running around was about to be, well, cut out completely. How was I going to make more money than I was making, and work less??? I had no idea, and I am so fortunate that I stumbled into Katrina Sawa! She spelled out exactly what I needed to do, step by step, and supported me along the way. Before I knew it, I had launched my first online fitness program, and it was successful! Before I met Katrina, I would never have thought I could do this, but she prompted me to keep taking steps, whether I thought I could or not! I now run fun and effective online fitness programs regularly and end up helping many more people in much less time! And I have plenty of time to spend with my son.”
“Katrina is a master at internet marketing. It was Katrina that introduce me to having a business that can be global and mobile. She gave me the tools to launch and build my online empire and create my very first tele-seminar that feature me interviewing top 6 & 7 figure women entrepreneurs including Kat the Kat-alyst herself. All of this has allowed me to receive and sell $10,000 coaching program within a week. I would not be the entrepreneur I AM today if it weren’t for my coaching session and connection with Katrina. I highly recommend working with her if you are serious about becoming successful and abundantly prosperous in your life.”
